The easiest way to make a camera is to take a box, put a small hole on one side, and place a piece of unexposed photographic paper on the inside of the box, opposite the side with the hole…

Then… cover the hole, go outside and aim the box at something cool. Uncover the hole for maybe 10 seconds or so, and then cover it, go inside and develop the photograph.

The main, basic parts of a camera are:

the body, a light-tight area that holds the media (paper, film, glass, etc) being used to capture an image

the aperature, the actual “hole” into the camera body where light penetrates, with size of this hole being important because of how much light is allowed in

the shutter, the object that physically blocks/unblocks the aperature, the speed of its opening and closing being important because of how much light is allowed in

obviously, there are other parts, such as lenses and focusing devices and flashes, but these are the most important and with just these 3 things you easily can build a pinhole camera from a cardboard box. you need to have 2 boxes that fit into each other tightly to keep light from entering the box. cut a small hole on the flat surface of one of the boxes, cover this with a piece of tinfoil taped inside the box, then make a small hole with the tip of a pin in the foil. the size of the hole (“aperature”) will determine the depth of field of the camera (the smaller the hole, the longer the depth of field and the more in-focus everything is; the bigger the hole, the shorter the depth of field and only closer things are in focus while things farther away are not). in a completely dark room, tape a piece of unexposed photo paper inside the box without the foil aperature, so that the pinhole in the foil is exactly opposite from the paper. put the boxes together, place your hand or some other cover over the pinhole, then venture out into the world to capture your image. to “take” a picture, place your camera on a steady surface and remove your hand/cover, then time how long you have the aperature open, recovering the pinhole when you’ve reached your time. the paper should be removed in a darkroom and developed through the normal process.
