Subject made by Meg: Does having lots of apps make your iPhone run more slowly?

I have 87 apps (including the default ones like “Camera”, “Safari”, “Calendar”, etc)

And I was wondering if I deleted maybe 15-20 of them if my phone would be any faster? It’s definitely not slow right now; I was just curious. Thanks in advance!

No the number of apps does not effect your phones speed. I have over 400 apps on my iPhone. The iPhone uses what is called suspended state multitasking and selective service multitasking. So essentially when you exit an app it is suspended in its current state and removed from memory. Some apps such as music and GPS apps can still use certain memory and phone functions when you leave the app however its fairly obvious when these apps are accessing your phones memory or functions. The default apps that come with the phone that were created by Apple do have more access to memory and other functions normal apps do not such as message and email. However Apple has done an excellent job of memory management and multitasking on the phone so you should never have to worry about the number of apps or managing your memory on your iPhone. Every now and then it doesn’t hurt to hard reset your iPhone to clean out the ram. Simply press the power and home button until the Apple logo appears typically 10-15 seconds. This usually eliminates any hang ups or leaks in the memory.

I do not think so. The. Reason for this is that the apps are just stored onto the phone’s memory, and aren’t actually using up any processing power until you open them up.

No, it will not make a difference in speed. The thing that may be slowing down your Iphone is “Running Apps” when you exit an app with just pressing the home button, the app is still running in the background. With tons of background apps, the preformance begins to slow down (makes sense, because if you have 27 running apps, each one takes up a little piece of your running space/ram). So, to end these running apps simply use these steps (super easy and won’t affect in a bad way at all):

1. Double click the home button, this will open up a bar underneath with a couple of apps (most likely ones that you recently used)

2. Press and hold one of these apps until they become wiggly.

3. You will see a little red – (minus) sign in the corner of each app, press that, it WILL NOT delete the app at all, it will just cancel the running process freeing up running space. Do this for each app until all have ended (don’t worry, if you end the calling one, you will still get calls, and texts etc.).

You should notice a considerable difference in running speed. I know when my mom did it, she started getting more calls and it was running smoother.
