Used to be no one would know for sure what the settings were or what method was used. Now that info is readily available in the exif data. There is no reason a photo made on the auto setting couldn’t be good. In routine lighting, auto or program does a pretty good job most of the time. The qualities of focus and composition still apply. If it was a crummy composition in auto, it will still be crummy composition in full manual mode, even if the exposure in both is spot on. Many people make quite nice shots with P&S cameras, or with their SLR set on auto. Knowing how to form your own exposure is useful and often mandatory when the lighting is not optimal, or when you want to emphasize an area or present a vision where auto might make a different decision than you want. And yes, many people waste the capabilities of their “very nice camera” by not learning more in depth about the technical basics. But for most casual shooters, auto is perhaps all they will ever want or need.
Unfortunately, that does not apply to new wedding photographers. If so, everyone would be Marc Williams, Monte Zucker or Jeff Ascough.
