Main issue basically by Tracey: What digital cameras would fit these preferences?
I am looking for a camera that is point and shoot, at least 12 mp, 30x zoom or better with a good reputation for low light settings and fast shooting for action pictures, and a vari-angle LCD screen. I would like a recent, but not totally new model so that I might be able to find it at a decent price for a used one.
I have no idea how to go about finding this “Dream camera” of mine. Any help is appreciated, whether it’s pointing me to a website that can help me locate it or giving me some actual model names. I have three kids and we’ve already missed way too many great photo opportunities since we lost our camera. And they grow so fast! Help, please!!

For that you would need a D-SLR. Try the Nikon D-5100. It has auto mode and a vari-angle screen. For the zoom, however, you will need to buy telephoto lenses to go with it.

I agree, a dslr will do the trick. Since I’m a Canon guy I only recommend what I own and therefore know. The t3i or t4i will do what you want. Understand now you’re in the $ 600 to $ 800 price range plus a telephoto lens you may choose – bottom line could be $ 1,300 or so.

30 x zoom on a DSLR? That will one great big heavy and expensive combo. You”d get most easily close to that with an Olympus DSLR because of the higher 2x crop factor.
However, maybe Canon have recently made just what you’re looking for?

The earlier ones with shorter zoom range have similar image quality.
Low light and action are going to be the major issues for you and for that you really should get a DSLR. Nikon currently have the edge for low light image quality.

Zoom may be lacking but its superior optical quality will make up for it.
