If the best quality camera phone is of the upmost-importance, then yes, get the Sony Ericsson C905a. That baby was made for pictures utilizing an 8.1 MP camera, XENON flash and Sony Cyber-Shot technology. Sony Cyber-Shot has good reputation with it’s cameras so I’m sure they won’t disappoint.

However, if the highest quality camera isn’t really important to you, then you should get the phones mentioned by the second answerer. Those phones have good software with different features that focus more on the “cell-phone” part rather than being a full-fledged camera.

All-in-all, it really depends on what you’re looking for.

Whenever you speak to people who have gone through a major disaster in their life, be it fire, flood, hurricane or the like, they are always speak of at least two things. First, that even though they might have “lost it all” they still are alive and have family and friends. Second, they always think of the pictures—either the ones destroyed and missing or the ones saved and recovered.

In it’s simplest form, photography is simply focusing light on a recording medium to capture an image. And while cameras in some form may have been around since the 1830’s or even before (Camera Obscura anyone?), it wasn’t until visionaries like George Eastman in 1888—with slogans like “you press the button, we do the rest”—worked on the technology of taking pictures and in doing so brought photography to the masses in such a way that the average family began to create a photographic history. Now, pictures of grandparents and great grandparents in vivid black and white are cherished family heirlooms, passed from one generation to the next. No one today has a mile stone event in their life—a birth, a wedding, a graduation—without getting a shot or two of the occasion. And over the years, inventors and creative people have sought to improve and simplify the process of capturing those images.

Some collect items because they are rare. Some collect because of the value. I collect because of the examples of ingenuity and workmanship that goes into these devices as they have been developed and improved over the years. While in high school and college I worked in a camera shop and saw first hand how these devices evolved to solve specific photographic problems, to capture the image sharper and with truer color and to make “taking pictures” simpler, easier and more fun. What many call “features” are really technical innovations that, in the end, make recording life’s events easier and rewarding.

My collection, now with more than 150 items, is very eclectic. I have no set type or style of camera that I seek. I will usually collect a camera because it features an innovation. This can be as complex as autofocus and as simple as being manufactured in “fashion” colors. It can be because they are just interesting. Most of the cameras in my collection are in working order, but some are not. This doesn’t lesson their value to me—they still are an example of the feature or technology that gives them value to me. And, yes, several of the cameras in my collection are either ones I have used or were gifts from family and friends—ones they used.

And in the end, they were all tools. To capture a moment in time….for personal enjoyment….or public display. In a lot of cases, they have out lived their original owner, but the images they made may continue to bring joy for generations to come. So I collect these tools—many simple, many complex—that at one time or another gave the person behind them the chance to say “OK, look this way and smile!”…
