Before it was illegal to charge a credit card before shipping. NY camera “stores” would charge your card, collect interest off the money and return it to you after 6 months or so. The “stores” were simply a bunch of guys who took your order, They never actually had any merchandise.
This scam was made illegal and they’ve evolved to “bait and switch”. Are there other, more creative ways, they’ve figured out to screw people?

I don’t think so. With all the suckers still falling for bait and switch I don’t see much innovation. About the only thing that’s new is that some now take the time and effort to create a bunch of accounts on resellerratings to give them a legit reputation to the casual observer.

While “technically” not bait & switch, a lot of the Brooklyn stores do the “you need to call for verification” bit… where after you place an order, you get an e-mail “requiring” you to call to verify the order.
When you call, the salesperson goes into a hard sell of “needed/required” additional items. Should you decline them, then the item you ordered is suddenly “on back-order for an indefinite time” (BUT, they do happen to have what you ordered WITH the additional items ready for shipment though).
The other thing the shady companies do is to overcharge for shipping/handling (and of course the “required ” insurance). It does NOT cost an extra $ 110 to $ 150 for standard SH&I for a camera and kit lens.
