Was watching the new star trek movie last night, and an otherwise kick-butt scene was completely ruined with the most ridiculous “shaking camera” effects. Made the scene unwatchable. Does anything think this method is clever? Does anyone think that “Monkey Cam” works in any situation?

i havent seen it yet, but i have seen very few movies utilize shaky cam in a good way, like the bourne movies would have been much better if there wasnt shaky cam when he does everything

I’ve had to stop watching “Cloverfield” “King Kong” (2005) and many other films because of that shakiness (Nice touch, that ‘monkey cam.’ It’s good to see that Dave Letterman’s classics are remembered!)
Trust today’s Hollywood to use poor film techniques to cover up their lack of film-making talent!

In theory, it can convey a sense of the chaos of the action, but a little of that goes a long way. I thought it was used to good effect in “Quantum of Solace”, for example. In practice, I suspect directors often use it to save the time and expense of having to choreograph and rehearse an action scene, or to try to add a sense of excitement to a scene where the action isn’t that good.
